Backgammon Tips & Tricks

Since backgammon is a game where there are plenty of possible moves, it's important to know all the tricks that the experienced players are already using in order to win.
But before getting to know the tricks it is essential to be familiar with backgammon's basic tips.

  • Stay focused on you strategy and try to anticipate both yours and your opponent's next move. Don't hesitate to think twice before every move you make. Remember that the object of this game is to win and not hitting off all opponents' checkers. Hence, try to put your checkers in a safe place which is a better strategy than trying to attack you opponent's checkers.
  • Try to avoid a point's gap between you and your opponent.
  • Concentrate on blocking your opponent's moves by placing your checkers in strategic locations.
  • Make an effort of always having an even number on the slots in order to avoid being hit by your opponent. If you should decide between hitting and getting a point you should only hit if afterwards you wouldn't be hit in response.
  • The bar point is well-known for giving the player seven points. Therefore this point is more precious and unsafe. If possible, head over and take four or five points which are the more secure ones and where you can't easily lose you checkers.
  • As you roll the dice, you will be told how many moves you can make and which one can be done or not. Remember to keep an eye on the dice and confirm that both you and you opponent are moving accordingly.

After referring to backgammon tips we can move on to the juicy stuff- the tricks.

First, for those who don't know, the doubling cube is the key to winning backgammon game. In backgammon you can redouble to four when your opponent doubles you to two. Consider a match to three where you are trailing 1-0. When your opponent doubles you should turn the cube on your next roll. There is nothing to put on risk since if you lose the game you consequently lose the match.

Second, the break-even point for accepting a double is about 25% if your probability of winning the game is at least 25%. Obviously, this doesn't consider gammons because if you have a chance of getting gammoned, you're more likely to drop.
Don’t wait until a game is frozen. Considering the first trick why should you give your opponent the possibility of getting lucky? Regarding to doubles there are guidelines- If your checkers are spaced, rather than being staffed in one point, that makes you more fitting to double or take.

Third, try to avoid from always making the safe move. Sometimes by doing this you're improving your chances of making points in your home board.

Remember when bearing off, use all your numbers to take checkers off rather than trying to smooth your distribution by filling holes.

When you already have several of your opponents checkers back, it is better to reinforce a prime than to send more back which may give them a better backgame or improve their timing.
