Beginners Guide to Backgammon



If you are new to backgammon, you can learn here about the basics of one the most popular board games online and offline. You can learn here how to set up the backgammon board and be introduced to the basic backgammon rules.

Backgammon is a two-players board game played upon a special board with a set of dice and two sets of 15 checkers, one for each player. Although the players' moves are conducted by the roll of the dice, backgammon is nothing but a game of luck. Backgammon is a skill game, whereby on each move the player can choose from various options and directions.  

Backgammon Board

The backgammon board consists of 24 triangles (called points), 12 on each side with every second triangle comes in a different color.
There are 4 groups of points: the player's home board and outer board and the opponent's home and outer board. The players' home and outer boards are separated by the bar.

The points are numbered 1 through 24:
Points 1 through 6 are on the players' home boards
The 7-point is the bar point.
Points 7-12 are the players' outer boards
The 13-point is the mid point.

How to set up the Backgammon Board?

Two checkers are placed on each of the players' 24 point;
Three checkers on the 8-point;
Five checkers on the 13-point and the 6-point.

Object of the Backgammon Game

The goal of the backgammon player' is to move his or her checkers before their opponents' and then to remove the checkers off the board. The first player who removes his checkers from the board wins the game.

The direction of the checkers' movement is determined by the outcome of the dice  from each player's 24-point towards the 1-point.

Backgammon Rules

  1. The game begins when both players are throwing one die each. The player, whose outcome is higher, may move his checkers according to the die outcome. For example, if it the number on the die was 5, the player may move the dice 5 spaces forward.  
  2. After the first roll, both players on their turn are throwing two dice.
  3. The players can move their checkers separately according to the dice outcome. For example, if the outcome is 2 and 5, the player can move one checker 2 points forward and the other 5 points forward or move one checker 7 points forward.
  4. Before moving the checkers forward, the players must verify that the destination point is open.
  5. When a player cannot move his checkers to an open point, he loses his turn.
  6. Double - when the outcome of the dice is double, the player may double the numbers appears on the dice and move the checkers the apparent number of spaces four times in every possible combination.  
  7. Blot – when a player's checker get to a point taken by his opponent's checker. If the outcome of the dice is the same as the number of point as the location of the blot, the player can bear off the checker and put it on the bar.
  8. The bearing off can be done only of the player's checkers are at his home board.
  9. When there aren't any checkers on the point of the same number as the outcome of the dice, the player must move the checker on the highest numbered point on the board. If there aren't any checkers there either, the player should move a checker from the highest point available.
  10. The winner of the backgammon game is the first player who has removed his entire checkers off the board.
